“with this being said, how do you feel about high pH (8-9.5) waters? useful or hokey
This is one of these common cases of company’s taking a little truth and tweaking it into a product that they try to sell. Basically as your body starts to exercise at higher and higher levels. The body starts to create energy with anerobic pathways ( energy made without the use of oxygen) These systems are awesome because they are able to produce energy for the body very fast. Faster than aerobic systems. But the down side to this is that it also produces a bi product of lactic acid which brings with it Hydrogen Ions (H+) these hydrogen’s lower your blood PH. Up to a certain point your body is able to process this extra acidity and deal with it through differen’t systems. But at a certain point the acidity is too great and it exceeds what is called your bodies lactate threshold. This is the point where you get that burn and you start to fatigue very fast. You can no longer go at the intensity you are once you reach this point. The idea of this product is that if you drink water that is higher in PH it will help counteract the Low PH created by anaerobic exercise. The problem here is that a small amount of high PH water isn’t going to have any effect on delaying this lactate threshold. An example of why it is silly to expect it works is in the case of people using sodium bicarbonate or baking soda before they work out. Some runners often ingest large amounts of sodium bicarbonate before running in order to improve the bodies buffering systems. This actually does in fact help. But the problem is that with most people the amount of Sodium Bicarbonate you have to ingest for it to have a positive effect you often will make yourself sick and give yourself stomach cramps. So the idea that a bottle of water can effect PH enough from drinking it is crazy when you think about how much sodium bicarbonate you would have to take to have an effect normally. This is just one more case of real science being twisted to make a profit.
The purpose of whey protein is to provide protein supplementation for people who either don’t get enough protein in their diet through normal eating or want to ingest a lot of it fast. It is true that after you exercise you should consume both proteins and carbohydrates to repair and rebuild your body. Often people use whey protein for this. But if you are working on losing weight there is no reason you need to be drinking your protein or supplementing. You would be much better off having a small healthy snack after your workout than having a protein shake. Some nuts, some lean turkey, or beans. These would all be much better options for you . Basically you don’t need it for what you want to do and it’s not going to be of any help in your case.
There are a lot of Gatorade commercials out there lately saying to the effect that drinking water during exercise is far inferior to drinking Gatorade. For most people who exercise this is both false and possibly detrimental to the progress they are trying to make. Especially in terms of weight loss. Now this is in no means ment to put Gatorade on blast. There are certain situations when Gatorade is an awesome product (especially since they switched their sugar source from High Fructose Corn Syrup to a Sucrose-Dextrose mix which is absorbed much faster into the blood stream and is much more optimal for replenishing of blood glucose levels). But the fact remains that the only people who are going to need the type of electrolyte and glucose supplementation are those people who are exercising for extended periods of time. I’m talking about athletes playing full games like soccer, football, basketball. Or people training for hours at a time or running long distance events. For those people Gatorade is awesome way to prevent fatigue and allow them to perform much longer than they would have would have drinking water alone. But for the general population that is working out for maybe an hour. Gatorade is totally unnecessary and if you are trying to lose weight might actually do more harm than the good you did at the gym. The simple truth of the matter is if you aren’t working out at an intense level for a long period of time you don’t need it. Water will work just fine for keeping you hydrated and cool during your workouts.
I’m all about being both healthy and happy when I eat. I don’t like to cut anything out of my diet permanently or deprive myself of anything. I try to make every meal I make as healthy as I can. Once and a while when I feel like it I’ll have a little junk food. I always just keep it to a small amount. Just to I can have a little fun and don’t feel like I “need” that food. I never get really bad cravings because of it. I can have anything I want. I just make sure its a reasonable sized portion that’s not gonna ruin all the other good things I do in the day. Doing this keeps me happy and helps me stick to my diet. I don’t even like how I eat to feel like torture .
Cheese isn’t that bad in moderation. In fact it’s been proven that if you have a little dairy products with your meal your body will absorb less fat from the meal. So having a little cheese or dairy product with a meal can actually be helpful to being healthy. A little is perfectly fine.
Haha I love food as well. The key is finding foods you love to eat that are healthy and fill you up. The best thing about eating better is that you can try out so many new foods you never would have that are healthy. You often realize that there are so many new things you like to eat. There are tons of good foods that you can eat your fill of that wont give you nearly the calories that other foods you eat might. It takes some exploring but you will find that discovering new favorite healthy foods can be really fun!
